{"id":835,"date":"2018-06-26T06:51:17","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T06:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shredeasy.com.au\/?p=835"},"modified":"2018-06-26T06:51:17","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T06:51:17","slug":"data-breaches-in-business-whos-really-at-fault","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calebgittins.com.au\/staging\/shred-easy\/data-breaches-in-business-whos-really-at-fault\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Breaches in Business : who&#8217;s really at fault?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When somebody says, \u2018Data Breach\u2019, we instantly think of a hooded-figure sitting in their Mothers\u2019 basement with a list of peoples\u2019 passwords.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, according to a recent study in the US, 52% of company data breaches are actually caused by human error &#8211; your employees.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be more specific, this happens when employees do not follow set policies and procedures put in place to keep the businesses confidential information secure or are generally \u2018careless\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently 95% of these breaches have the potential to uncover private company data.<br \/>\nJust look at the recent data breach involving Facebook \u2013 one of the worlds\u2019 most successful organisations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-836\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shredeasy.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Blog-Image-June.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the most part, many data breaches can be easily prevented through employee education to recognise phishing attacks, using more complex passwords and keeping hard drives, USB\u2019s and laptops in a secure place within the workplace in which all employees know their location so that they\u2019re not easily misplaced.<\/p>\n<p>One example of a recent internal-data breach was in 2016, when a hacker posted as Evan Spiegel and sent an email to an employee who was working in the payroll department for the social network Snapchat. This resulted in the personal protected information (PPI) of seven-hundred employees being released.
